GREAT RIVER RACE

Woking Sea Cadets row from strength to strength

A team of adults with a cadet coxswain from Woking Sea Cadets took part in this year’s Great River Race on September 13, to raise funds for the unit by rowing the 22 miles from Richmond to Greenwich.
With a strong start, Woking managed to win their class, crossing the finish line four hours and ten minutes later, thirty minutes ahead of last years ASC winner and 15 minutes ahead of the competition.
The day turned out great despite initial worries of a flooded river and they pulled together to complete the gruelling task along with almost 300 other competitors. Lt John Bray, Commanding Officer, was accompanied by Sergeant Chris Richards, Instructor Glyn Thompson, Leading Cadet Kieran Comer, Treasurer John Crook and Committee member Pete Traylor who stand to raise almost £1500 for their efforts.
Woking Sea Cadets would like to extend their thanks and gratitude all those who sponsored Woking Sea Cadets and especially to:
Crook & Co, Chartered Accountants, Woking;
Documentation People Ltd, Chobham and
Booker Cash and Carry, Byfleet

for there financial support in the build up to this race.
Woking’s entry was almost scuppered when a last minute hitch prevented the use of their own boat, but the day was saved when Caterham Sea Cadets stepped in with the loan of a boat. Woking Sea Cadets provide Nautical Experiences both Naval and Marine for young people between the ages of 10 and 18. They parade every Monday and Thursday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30pm at their base in Westfield Avenue, Woking. New recruits are always welcome, contact 01483 768323 for details.
